Agency Selection:

There are many advantages to selecting a caregiver for in-home care through an agency like Care Alternatives. Agencies employ their workers full time, meaning the agency handles all paper work involved with hiring/firing, wages, taxes, social security and workers’ compensation. One key advantage is that agencies can provide services for as little as a few hours a day, once a week or 24 hours a day. If a caregiver is sick, a suitable replacement is provided.

Some questions to ask an agency:

  1. How long has the agency been providing home care?
  2. Is a written, customized care plan developed in consultation with the client and family members, and is the plan updated as changes occur?
  3. How are emergencies handled after normal business hours?
  4. Do they closely supervise the quality of care, including maintenance of a daily journal in the client’s home and non-scheduled supervisory visits?
  5. Does the agency employ a nurse, social worker, or other qualified professional to make regular visits to the client’s home?
  6. Do they provide a written document that states the rights and responsibilities of the client, and explains the company’s privacy policy and code of ethics?
  7. Do they screen their caregiver employees carefully, including use of reference checks and criminal background investigations?
  8. Does the agency manage all payroll and employee-related matters and adhere to state and federal guidelines in its employment practices, such as withholding appropriate taxes and providing Workers’ Compensation and other benefits?
  9. Is there a contract to start or end services? How much notice do I have to give to stop services?

How Do I Pay For Services? Does Medicare pay for services?

Most care is paid for privately by clients. Long term care insurance will also cover non-medical care sometimes. It is important to review your long term care policy or have Care Alternatives review it for you. Unfortunately, Medicare does NOT cover non-medical home care and therefore, most health insurance does NOT cover services for in home care. You are encouraged to check with you insurance agent directly for more information.

Care Alternatives accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover, checks, cash and American Express. Bills are mailed out twice a month for services rendered. We can work with you to determine your needs and stay within your budget for home care services.
